Bonaire is a small island - 44 kilometers long, roughly 5-11 kilometers wide - but it packs an unusually diverse range of activities into that compact geography. The west coast is one of the best shore diving and snorkeling destinations in the Caribbean. The east coast has world class kitesurfing and windsurfing at Lac Bay. The north is protected national park with wildlife, hiking and remote bays. The south has the salt flats, slave hut history and flamingo viewpoints.
And scattered across the island are activities that exist nowhere else in the Caribbean - including a beachcombing tour hunting for sea glass dating from the 1700s and the chance to snorkel from a vessel that was part of Jacques Cousteau's research fleet. This guide covers the best things to do in Bonaire with honest descriptions of what each experience is actually like, who it suits and how to pace a typical week on the island.

Two shore dives before breakfast, surface interval, two more dives mid-morning, lunch, afternoon dive or rest, repeat. Washington Slagbaai National Park gets one full day. Salt flats get a half day. Klein Bonaire gets one boat day. Everything else fits around the diving.
A mix of snorkeling tours, the national park, salt flats, kayaking in Lac Bay, landsailing, a sunset sail and one or two longer guided tours to understand the island's history and character. Enough to fill a week comfortably without repeating yourself.
Both approaches work. Bonaire rewards people who move slowly and pay attention to what is around them rather than rushing between checkboxes.
Before covering tours it is worth addressing shore diving directly because it shapes the entire Bonaire experience even for non-divers. The west coast is lined with over 80 marked shore entry sites - yellow painted stones on the roadside indicate each entry point. You park, gear up and walk in. No boat required. No divemaster unless you want one.
This system is what makes Bonaire unique. Divers with their own certification and a tank package have complete freedom to dive any site any time conditions allow. The marine park nature fee - paid once per stay - covers all of it. See our snorkeling guide for the best sites if you are not a certified diver.

Bonaire's trade winds make it one of the Caribbean's best kitesurfing destinations. Lac Bay at Sorobon is shallow, protected and consistent. Private IKO lessons and UTV south-coast tours are available.
Full guide: Bonaire adventure toursFor divers: shore diving the west coast freely with a tank package - the combination of quality, accessibility and freedom is unlike anywhere else in the Caribbean. For non-divers: Washington Slagbaai National Park - consistently described as the best day of the trip by visitors who go.
Yes for popular tours especially in peak season December through April. The Aquaspace sunset sail, private cave tours and small-group snorkel excursions with limited capacity fill up. Book online before arrival rather than hoping for walk-up availability.
Yes - snorkeling, kayaking, landsailing, island tours, the national park, salt flats, sunset sailing and fishing give non-divers a genuinely full week of activities without touching scuba gear.
A minimum of five days to do the island justice - Washington Slagbaai National Park alone deserves a full day, and the combination of west coast snorkeling, Lac Bay and the south coast requires time. Seven to ten days is ideal for divers who want to cover most of the west coast sites seriously.
Technically possible - flights between the islands take approximately 30-40 minutes. In practice a day trip does not do justice to Bonaire's highlights. A minimum of three nights is worth it for the national park and marine activities alone.
Bonaire can fill a full week easily for both divers and non-divers. The key is pacing: one or two anchor activities per day, then leave room for conditions, energy, and spontaneous extra water time.
