Grote Knip (Playa Kenepa Grandi)

Grote Knip is the beach most people picture when they search for the best beaches in Curaçao: a wide white-sand cove, limestone walls and water that turns from pale to deep blue a few metres out. It is the one to visit first if you only have one west-coast day.

Go early if you drive yourself. Parking fills, the sand gets hot, and the viewpoint above the beach is busier after late morning. Bring water and something for shade. This is a cove to swim and sit in, not a place with loungers waiting for you.

02 · West · Bandabou

Cas Abao

Often spelled Cas Abao or Cas Abou

Cas Abao is the west-coast beach that works as an actual day, not only a photo stop. You get a longer stretch of sand, a reef close enough for a mask and snorkel, and somewhere to sit after you get out of the water.

Independent visitors usually pay to enter. That is the trade: more facilities than Grote Knip, less of the empty-cove feeling. If you have children, or you want several hours in one place, start here rather than trying to stitch four free coves together.

Porto Marie

It functions as a hangout beach: stay, swim, eat, repeat. Confirm the current entry or parking charge on the day.

Playa Piskadó / Playa Grandi

Turtle Beach

Playa Piskadó is a working fishermen’s beach that became Curaçao’s standard turtle stop. The sand is small. The scene is boats, other swimmers and, on a good day, turtles feeding near the boats.

Treat it as a 20–40 minute stop. Do not expect a polished resort beach, and do not count on having the water to yourself.

Lagun Beach

Playa Lagun is a small inlet between cliffs, not a long beach. That is why it snorkels well: the rock walls drop you onto reef without a long swim from a wide shore.

It is a strong choice if you want one west-coast stop and most of the time in the water. It is a weak choice if you want space to spread out. Arrive earlier on weekends, and bring water shoes for the rocky edges.

Klein Knip

Kleine Knip sits on the same stretch of coast as Grote Knip and is easy to pair on one drive. It is smaller and more enclosed — better when you want a shorter swim or a snorkel along the rocks rather than the wide postcard beach.

You do not need to visit both if time is tight. Use Grote Knip for the view and the open cove; drop down to Kleine Knip if the main beach is packed or you specifically want to snorkel the edge.

Go here when you already know you like simple coves. Skip it if you want bathrooms, a bar and a guaranteed lounger. It pairs well with Knip or Piskadó on a self-drive day because you are already on the northwest coast.

The water is still Curaçao-clear. The trade is atmosphere: this is not Grote Knip. Use it for a low-logistics day, a first afternoon after you land, or a beach day with people who do not want to bounce between coves.

Mambo Beach is convenient. You can eat, walk the promenade, rent a chair and swim without planning a west-coast route. That makes it useful on a short cruise day or when you are staying in Willemstad and want a beach you can reach quickly.

It is not a substitute for Knip or Cas Abao. If your search was “best beaches in Curaçao,” Mambo answers a different question: where can I swim and have lunch without a car. Both answers can be right on the same trip.

Jan Thiel is for drinks, lunch and a swim in a designed beach setting. If you are staying in the Jan Thiel area, it is the obvious local beach. If you came to Curaçao for empty limestone coves, it will feel like a different island.

Use it in the late afternoon when you want restaurants more than another drive west. Pair it with a west-coast morning only if you enjoy long days; most people do one or the other.

Kokomo Beach

Kokomo sits between Willemstad and the far west, which is why it works as a simpler day trip. You get a beach you can stay at — swim, eat, sit — without committing to the full Westpunt circuit.

Families often prefer it to a string of tiny coves. If you already have a car and a full west-coast day, you can still stop here on the way back. If you only have one easy beach afternoon, Kokomo or Blue Bay will feel less like a project than Knip.

Playa Forti

Westpunt cliff beach

Playa Forti is the west-coast lunch and viewpoint stop. From above you see fishing boats and the curve of the western tip. The beach itself is brown sand and small pebbles, with occasional cliff jumpers and almost no shade.

Put it on a self-drive or hopping day between Piskadó and Knip. Do not plan it as your only “best beach” of the trip. Eat, look, maybe swim, then move on to a sandier cove if you still want to sit in the water.

The view, a cliff-top lunch and watching jumpers — not a long lounge
