Surfing in Aruba: Best Beaches, Waves & Bodyboarding

Can you surf in Aruba? The resort beaches are calm. Waves show up on the exposed coast, along rocky shore and quieter beaches. Andicuri, on the north coast, is the place this guide can actually point to.

Palm Beach is the wrong place to rent a board and expect a surf break. Some of the exposed beaches have current, and a wave is not the same thing as a safe entry. The bookable wave session in the current tour list is bodyboarding at Andicuri, from $65 per person. A stand-up surfing lesson is not in that list.

Can You Surf in Aruba?

Yes, on the exposed coast. Aruba is not a resort-beach surf destination. The split that matters is between the sheltered hotel shore and the north and east coasts.

Resort beaches

Palm Beach and Eagle Beach are for swimming and sitting in the water. They are not where people go for a wave. Staying in the hotel strip does not put a surf break in front of the resort.

North and east coast

Those shores take Atlantic swell and wind-driven waves. They can also mean current, rock, and a walk-in that is not obvious. A wave on its own does not make the beach a place to surf. If you do not know this coast, do not walk into an isolated break on your own.

Best Surfing Beaches in Aruba

Suitability changes with the day, the swell and how you surf. These are the coasts people ask about. They are not a promise that the wave is right when you arrive.

1. Andicuri Beach

Andicuri is on the rugged north coast, facing exposed water, and it can have substantial waves. It is also where the guided bodyboarding session on this page goes. It is not a supervised swimming beach. Current and the shore break can be a problem if you are new to it. A tour operating there does not mean the beach is a beginner surf spot on your own.

  • North-coast scenery, away from the hotel strip.
  • Waves along the shore.
  • The guided bodyboard session, not a stand-up lesson.

2. Dos Playa

Dos Playa is another exposed shore, in the broader Arikok area, and it looks nothing like Eagle Beach. The water can be too much for a casual swim or a first surf. Swell, current and access all change, and park rules need a check before you go. For most visitors it is a scenic coast, not an easy beginner break. Surfing it on your own needs local knowledge.

3. Boca Grandi

Boca Grandi is on the southeast coast and is known for wind sports, because it sits in the trade wind. Wind-driven chop is not a beginner surf break, and it is not a substitute for a supervised surf beach. If the plan is a sail or a kite, read kitesurfing in Aruba.

Guided Bodyboarding in Aruba

Bodyboarding is riding prone on a shorter board. You still have to read the wave and control the board. It is not standing up on a surfboard. This is the guided wave session in the current tour list.

  • Operator: Mikhael Aruba
  • Starting price: $65 per person
  • Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes
  • Location: Andicuri Beach
  • Ages: 12–65
  • Rating: 5.0/5 from 1 reviews

The route starts around the Natural Bridge, stops at Shark Bay, then reaches Andicuri. The operator says the road is too rough to drive that route, so the group walks. The guide helps if you have not bodyboarded before.

Formal inclusions are a bodyboard and one bottle of water. The description also refers to equipment and guidance. Confirm anything beyond the board and the water. You must be able to swim and have moderate fitness. The listing is not recommended for spinal injuries, pregnancy, poor cardiovascular health, dizziness or difficulty walking. Up to 10 travelers can book. Sales are final, and the operator may cancel for unsuitable weather.

Best for: an active day on the north coast, with scenery and a guided bodyboard session. It does not teach you to stand on a surfboard.

Lying down can be an easier first try than standing. It is not automatically safer. A strong shore break and a current do not care which board you brought. Pick a day that matches your level, and stay with the guide on this session.

Can You Take Surfing Lessons in Aruba?

A local instructor may teach stand-up surfing. None of the Viator listings reviewed for this page is that lesson. The guided wave booking is bodyboarding at Andicuri.

If you want to stand on a surfboard, ask an instructor for the beach, whether the day suits a beginner, what board is included, the length of the lesson, the swimming rule and what happens if the waves are wrong. A windsurfing or kitesurfing booking is a different sport.

Can You Rent a Surfboard in Aruba?

A rental may exist locally. This page does not have a verified board-only rental. Experienced surfers can ask an operator about gear and the day’s conditions. A rental does not make every beach a surf beach. The exposed coast can be a long way from help. Beginners are better with instruction than with a board and a guess.

When Is the Best Time to Surf in Aruba?

Swell direction, height, wind and the shape of the coast decide the day. The trade wind is reliable. Wind is not a surf forecast. Exposed stretches can have waves through the year, and the quality still changes. Morning is not automatically better. On the bodyboard session, use the operator’s time and their weather call. They may cancel when the conditions are wrong.

Is Surfing in Aruba Safe?

The north coast is not Palm Beach. Waves, current and a rough entry are the risks.

  • Do not treat a wave as a safety clearance.
  • Watch current and shore break.
  • Skip isolated spots if you do not know the exit.
  • Do not go in alone on an unfamiliar beach.
  • Stay inside what you can swim and what you can walk.
  • Follow the guide, and stay off the rocks.

What to Bring

This session is a walk and then time in the water.

  • Swimwear and shoes you can walk in.
  • A sun shirt, sunscreen and a towel.
  • Drinking water. The listing includes one bottle.
  • A small bag and the booking confirmation.

Ask whether any extra protection is provided.

Surfing in Aruba: Frequently Asked Questions

Can you surf in Aruba?

Yes, on parts of the exposed north and east coast. Conditions change, and many of those beaches are a poor match for a first session.

Is Aruba good for surfing?

It has waves. It is better known for resort beaches and wind sports than for a surf-town scene.

Where can you surf?

Andicuri is the wave beach this guide can tie to a booking. Dos Playa is another exposed shore. Whether either is surfable that day depends on the swell and your level.

Is there surfing at Palm Beach?

Palm Beach is the calm hotel shore, not a traditional surf break.

Can beginners surf?

Only with instruction and a day that fits a beginner. The north coast can be hazardous on your own.

Can you book a surfing lesson?

How much does bodyboarding cost?

The Mikhael Aruba session starts at $65 per person for about 2.5 hours.

Where is Andicuri Beach?

On the north coast. This excursion walks there from the Natural Bridge area and stops at Shark Bay. The operator says the road is too rough to drive.

Is bodyboarding the same as surfing?

No. Bodyboarding is prone on a shorter board. Surfing is standing on a surfboard.

Is bodyboarding suitable for beginners?

The guide helps people who have not tried it. You still need to swim, meet the fitness note, and get a day the operator will run.

Can children go?

This listing is ages 12 to 65. Confirm with the operator.

Can you rent a surfboard?

A local rental may exist. This page does not include a verified board-only rental.

Is the north coast safe for swimming?

It can have strong waves and current. Many of those beaches are not a casual swim.

Is windsurfing the same as surfing?

No. Windsurfing uses a sail and the wind. Surfing uses a breaking wave.

Want to Ride Waves in Aruba?

The guided option is the Andicuri bodyboard session, from $65 per person for 2.5 hours. You walk the north coast and then ride. It is not a stand-up surfing lesson.

Check the fitness rules, the weather and the cancellation line before you pay. Sales are final, and the operator may cancel for unsuitable weather.
